The 4-4-0 locomotive, also known as the American type, was built in 1868 by Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey, together with locomotives Nos. 116, 117, 118 and 120. No. 119 was standing at Ogden station in Utah when a call arrived from Thomas C. Durant, then vice-president of Union Pacific, who was on his way to Promontory Summit and urgently needed a locomotive.
A similar situation had occurred to Leland Stanford, who requested the Jupiter after the Antelope failed. As a result, Jupiter and Rogers No. 119 became part of railway history. Durant was travelling to the Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory in his special train together with a group of dignitaries.
Floodwater had washed away several supports of the so-called Devil's Gate Bridge. The engineer refused to take the heavy locomotive across the damaged bridge, but agreed to push the lighter passenger cars over it. The bridge held and the coaches reached the opposite bank, but they were left without a locomotive.
Help was requested from Ogden and No. 119 eventually hauled the coaches over the short remaining distance to Promontory, where it met Central Pacific's Jupiter.
No. 119 continued in freight service and was later renumbered 343. When it was finally scrapped in 1903, the sale of its parts raised an impressive 1,000 dollars.
This spectacular model of locomotive No. 119 forms the famous pair together with the Jupiter locomotive model.
