Apóstol Felipe was one of six galleons built by Martín de Arana for the Spanish king Philip IV. They belonged to the so-called Silver Galleons. This type of galleon was used to transport goods and treasure between America and Spain on the Carrera de las Indias. The ship made its first voyage as part of the fleet in 1629, carrying gold and precious stones to Spain. Until 1633 it served as an admiral's ship of the Armada de la Guardia. The galleon took part in the war in Brazil during the recapture of Pernambuco and transported troops and money to Flanders during the Battle of the Downs.
