Historical background:
RAYO was a Spanish 80-gun ship of the line, 51.70 m long, built as a two-decker in Havana in the mid-18th century. Construction began in 1748 together with the ship REAL FENIX. Designer Pedro Torres chose tropical timber to ensure a robust construction. Although completed on 31 January 1751, the ship could not immediately put to sea because the necessary crew was unavailable. Later she sailed for Cadiz with 453 sailors, carrying tobacco, sugar and timber.
During the war with England in 1779, RAYO formed part of the combined Franco-Spanish fleet in the English Channel. Under Commander Gaston she sailed for Gibraltar on 23 January 1780 to join the blockade. Numerous refits during her service altered her armament. Eventually she had three decks and 100 guns, with a length of 61 m.
Her end came as a result of damage, including the loss of a mast, sustained at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Days later, during an attempt to recapture prizes, the ship was taken by HMS Donegal. With a British prize crew aboard, she ran aground in a storm on 26 October 1805. The broken hull was set on fire and destroyed by British sailors.
