Historical background:

The galleon was a usually three-masted sailing-ship type originally developed in 16th-century Spain. Contrary to popular belief, the galleon was not a cumbersome merchant ship but a fast, manoeuvrable and seaworthy warship by the standards of its time. Because of its superior military qualities, the galleon was adopted and independently developed by almost all European seafaring nations, becoming the dominant type of warship.

From the end of the 16th century well into the 17th century, galleons were built in many different sizes and forms. Typical of the galleon was the beakhead, a projecting platform at the bow that made it easier to handle the spritsail on the bowsprit. This feature was also adopted by other 17th-century ship types such as the fluyt and pinnace, which is why these vessels are sometimes confused with galleons.
