BALLENERA/WHALE BOAT

Historical background:

These boats approached whales so that they could be harpooned. They had the same shape at bow and stern to facilitate rapid changes of direction and increase manoeuvrability. Larger whaleboats carried crews of up to eight people and were equipped with a wide range of hunting and navigation equipment. A harpooned whale could tow a boat for many miles before tiring. Returning to the mother ship could take hours, so at the outset the boat was well supplied with drinking water, food, as well as a mast, sail and compass.
