The galleon San Martin was built in Portugal and came into Spanish possession in 1580. It became the flagship of the Spanish Armada. On 22 March 1588 Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, Duke of Medina-Sidonia and admiral of the Armada, raised his ensign above the galleon's mainmast. San Martin was one of the few ships to survive both the storms and the artillery of the English fleet.
