Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes

The frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes was built in Havana in 1788 for the Spanish Royal Navy and was armed with 34 guns. When she left Montevideo on 9 August 1804, her holds were filled with gold, silver, copper, tin, vicuña wool, cinchona bark and cinnamon.
On 5 October 1804 the Battle of Cape Santa Maria took place between the Royal Navy and the Spanish fleet. La Mercedes was hit by a shell and sank almost immediately.
In May 2007 the American salvage company Odyssey Marine located the wreck in the Gulf of Cádiz using modern sonar surveys. A remotely operated underwater vehicle capable of reaching depths of up to 1,100 metres recovered the long-lost cargo of La Mercedes.
The cargo included around 500,000 silver and gold coins, including eight-real coins and escudos minted in Lima in 1803. It is considered the largest treasure ever recovered from the seabed. Part of the recovered treasure is now exhibited at the Archaeological Museum in Cartagena.

The kit includes all parts required for assembly, step-by-step illustrated building instructions and various plans.
