The HMS Beagle was one of the most famous ships of its time for several reasons. She is best known for her surveying voyage under Commander Robert FitzRoy, with the young Charles Darwin on board.
Built at Woolwich Dockyard, she was launched on the Thames on 11 May 1820. In July 1820, during the fleet review held as part of the coronation celebrations for King George IV, she was the first ship to sail beneath the London Bridge of that time.
The HMS Beagle made three major voyages. Charles Darwin joined the second expedition. Of the almost five years that this expedition lasted, Darwin spent three years and three months on land and eighteen months at sea.
