Five galleons left the port of Plymouth, England, on 13 December 1577 under the command of Captain Francis Drake aboard the galleon The Pelican.
When the expedition passed through the Strait of Magellan, Drake renamed The Pelican as The Golden Hind in honour of one of the expedition's sponsors, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose coat of arms featured a golden hind.
The Golden Hind became famous for its circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580. After sailing some 40,000 miles, Drake returned to England in 1580 with treasure and newly claimed lands. In 1581 Queen Elizabeth I knighted him on the deck of the Golden Hind.
