Historical Background of the Hercules Salvage Tug

The Hercules began its career as a high-seas tugboat and was often used for voyages along the coast of San Francisco to the north, due to the prevailing northwest winds. Later, it was used to tow barges to other West Coast ports and to Hawaii, as well as transport equipment for the construction of the Panama Canal.

One memorable event in the history of the Hercules occurred in 1947 when it was tasked with the tugging of the battleship Oklahoma’s hull to the San Francisco Bay for scrapping. 500 miles off the coast of Hawaii, the ship was struck by a powerful storm, and the Oklahoma began to fill with water and sink. The Hercules could not free itself in time and narrowly escaped disaster as the Oklahoma almost dragged it down to the ocean floor.

In 1986, the Hercules was declared a National Historic Landmark and is now one of the exhibits at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, located at the Hyde Street Pier. It remains a significant maritime monument.
