HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The Fram is known as one of the most resilient and iconic polar ships in the history of Arctic and Antarctic exploration. Designed to withstand the harshest sailing conditions and endure the blows of ice blocks as hard as stone and as sharp as blades, it was built to move forward, always forward. That is why the Norwegians named it Fram.

During its years of service, the Fram was not only a technical marvel but also a symbol of perseverance and the spirit of exploration: a relentless and tireless pursuit of the unknown. It was intended to sail during the summer and allow the winter freeze to trap the ship, turning it into a stationary base.

Dragged by the movement of the floating ice (since there is no land at the North Pole), the ship would study ice movements and perhaps come close enough to the planet's northernmost point to launch an assault.

The vessel turned out to be slow and difficult to maneuver, with all the seafaring qualities of a barn. However, it was highly capable of withstanding the pressure of the ice.

To ensure this, its builders took extreme measures. The keel was constructed with two 36x36 cm beams of American elm, upon which the frames were mounted.

Its rounded and sturdy hull protected it from the relentless pressure of polar ice, allowing it to float on the ice pack instead of being crushed, as happened to other vessels.Between 1893 and 1912, the Fram participated in three historic polar expeditions:
-Nansen's Expedition (1893-1896): Reached a record proximity to the North Pole (82°27'N).
-Otto Sverdrup's Expedition (1898-1902): Mapped and explored 260,000 km² in the Canadian Arctic, discovering new islands.
-Roald Amundsen's Expedition (1910-1912): Used for the conquest of the South Pole, reached on December 14, 1911.

History of the Original

The Cutty Sark was built in 1869 in Dumbarton, Scotland, and was designed as a fast clipper for long-distance trade. Initially, she sailed in the tea trade between China and London, where speed and reliability determined economic success. One particularly famous episode is the Tea Race of 1872, in which the Cutty Sark lost her rudder in heavy weather and therefore fell decisively behind.

When the tea trade for sailing ships became increasingly unprofitable due to competition from steamships, the Cutty Sark switched to the Australian wool trade, where she experienced her most successful period. Later the ship was sold to Portuguese owners and continued operating as a cargo vessel before eventually returning to England and serving for a time as a training ship. Since 1954, the Cutty Sark has been preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich. After a fire in 2007, she was restored and remains preserved today as an important historic vessel.

The Refreshed Version is designed as a classic plank-on-frame wooden model kit, suitable for a high-quality finish. The kit follows a structured construction approach with clearly organized parts and combines modern manufacturing of wooden components with numerous metal and detail parts.

Materials, Components and Sails

The Refreshed Version of the Cutty Sark is designed as a high-quality wooden kit with clearly separated materials. Structural and visible parts are made from laser-cut components of American walnut, American cherry, and limewood, as well as limewood plywood.

For planking, strips and round stock, the kit additionally includes birch strips, walnut strips, walnut dowels, as well as sapeli strips and sapeli veneer, allowing the hull, decks and details to be finished cleanly and with visually differentiated wood tones.

For finer equipment and detailing, the kit includes a brass photo-etched sheet (200 × 130 mm). Numerous small parts are sorted into four transparent boxes and consist of wooden, brass and die-cast components. In total, the kit contains more than 3,000 individual parts.

For the final appearance, 26 pre-sewn sails are included, allowing the complete sail set to be installed without additional sewing work. Fabric-style flags are also included. The building documentation consists of a 100-page full-color instruction manual and five large plan sheets. The HMS Erebus was a Royal Navy ship that participated with the HMS Terror on James Clarc Ross´s Erebus and Terror expedition in Antarctica and other expeditions in the Arctic. These two ships were reinforced at the bow to resist the twisting of the pack ice on the boat, and they had steam engines.

The Antarctic expedition, between 1839 and 1843 was a success.

Arround 1845, the Erebus and the Terror were assigned to traverse the last unnavigated sections of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic and to record magnetic data to help determine wether a better understanding could aid navigation. The expedition met with disaster after both ships and their crews, a total of 129 officers and men, became icebound in Victoria Strait near King William Island in what is today the Canadian territory of Nunavut. After being icebound for more than a year Erebus and Tewrror were abandoned in April 1848, by wich point Franklin and nearly two dozen others had died.

on March 4, 2015, it was announced that an expedition from Parks Canada, a Canadian goverment institution, had found the wreckage of one of Franklin´s expedition ships, which turned out to be HMS Erebus. The Wreck is destinated a National Historic Site of Canada with the precise location of the destignation on hold. The initial objective was to find such vessels and thus strengthen Canada´s claims to sovereignty over large portions of the Arctic Archipelago.

on October 32, 2017 UK Defense Minister Michael Fallon announced that his goverment would hand over HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror to Canada, keeping only some relics and gold, along with the right to repatriate any human rest.

Finally, the remains of the ship were discovered on 1 September 1985 by Robert Ballard during a secret mission spearhead by the United States Navy. The wreck of the Titanic was located 3,784 metres deep, about 800 km off the coast of Canada.

The Endurance was launched on 17 December 1912 under the name “Polaris”. Originally rigged as a frigate, she was converted into a three-masted barquentine and in 1914 joined the famous Trans-Antarctic Imperial Expedition to cross Antarctica under Sir Ernest Shackleton’s command.

After the Expedition was shipwrecked on 19 August 1915, the Endurance was trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea. For 522 days the explorers braved winds up to 300 km/h and temperatures of 40 degrees below zero.

Shackleton and a few hand-picked men took a small boat, the James Caird, and made one of the most memorable and heroic journeys in sailing history. Together with all their crew, they accomplished the most important feat of all...surviving.

The expedition is remembered as an epic story of endurance, heroism and survival.

In 1784 Work on the construction of the ship San Ildefonso began in Cartagena, based on a design by José Romero de Landa, who had been asked to build a 74-gun ship that would serve as a prototype for the future vessels of the Spanish Royal Navy, and under his direction. Following favourable reports from her sea trials, she was adopted as the model for another seven ships that were built over the coming years, and which came to be known as the Ildefonsinos. After seeing action on numerous occasions, both in the Mediterranean Squadron and the Ocean Squadron, she took part in the battles of Cape St. Vincent, in 1797, and Trafalgar, in 1805. At Trafalgar, under Commodore Don José Vargas, and forming a part of the combined fleet's observation squadron, she was one of the fastest in the fleet. 34 of her crew members were killed and another 148 wounded.
