Historical Overview:vbr> Antonio Barceló designed these gunboats during the Great Siege of Gibraltar in 1779. Despite their small size, they proved to be formidable rivals. Fast and maneuverable, equipped with a powerful 24-pounder bow cannon, they were particularly effective in coastal combat during light winds or calm conditions. Using both sails and oars, they could approach from the blind spot and open fire.

Historical Overview:

The HMS Agamemnon was designed by the renowned naval architect Sir Thomas Slade, who also created the plans for the HMS Victory. Built by Henry Adams at Bucklers Hard, the 64-gun ship was launched in 1781 after four years of construction. The HMS Agamemnon became one of the most famous ships in the Royal Navy.

Nelson, who referred to her as his favorite ship, commanded her between 1793 and 1796.
It was aboard the HMS Agamemnon that Nelson lost sight in his right eye during the siege of Calvi in 1794.
For three turbulent decades of British naval history, the HMS Agamemnon was at the center of numerous battles, including Trafalgar, before being wrecked in South American waters off the coast of Uruguay in 1809.

Historical Overview:

The BUCENTAURE was a French flagship armed with 80 cannons, under the command of French Vice Admiral Pierre de Villeneuve. Villeneuve was tasked by Napoleon to break out of the British-blockaded port of Cádiz to support a landing in southern Italy. Napoleon had already abandoned his initial plan to invade England following a failed diversionary maneuver by Villeneuve.

On October 21, 1805, during the Battle of Trafalgar, the French-Spanish fleet suffered a devastating defeat. The British captured or destroyed 20 enemy ships. Although Nelson fell in the battle, his victory permanently thwarted Napoleon’s plans for an invasion of the British Isles.

Historical Overview:

The Salvador del Mundo was a Spanish 112-gun, three-deck ship built in 1787 in Ferrol for the Spanish Navy, based on plans by Romero Landa. It was one of the eight very large ships of the Santa Ana class. The ship served during the French Revolutionary Wars until its capture by a Royal Navy fleet during the Battle of Cape St. Vincent on February 14, 1797. It remained in British hands during the Napoleonic Wars, serving as a harbor ship until it was decommissioned in 1815.

The DISAR kit represents a falúa from the 112-gun ship Salvador del Mundo. This type of felucca was equipped with lateen and spritsails and featured an awning at the stern, designed for boarding high-ranking Spanish naval officers. Only ships with three or more decks carried this type of boat.

Historical Overview

The tugboat Altsu-Mendi was built in Spain in 1913 and equipped with a 3-cylinder steam engine delivering 450 horsepower. At a speed of 9 knots, it consumed 9 tons of coal per day. Based in Bilbao, the 28.35-meter-long and 6.10-meter-wide tugboat was also used for rescue missions along various sections of the Cantabrian coast.

The Altsu-Mendi participated in the Battle of Cape Matxitxako during the Spanish Civil War. After the war, non-motorized barges loaded with iron ore from the mines along the Cantabrian coast were towed by tugboats to the steel mills in Barakaldo.

The tugboat saw no major modifications during its service and remained in the estuary of the Ría de Bilbao until it was decommissioned and scrapped in 1974, after more than 60 years of service.

Kit History:
Originally designed and announced in the early 1990s, the kit by Talhoer was never mass-produced. For unknown reasons, the project was abandoned until late 2014, when the Spanish company DISARMODEL, under new management, successfully launched the kit with all components and the original design.
