In the center of the Iberian Peninsula, numerous remains of medieval castles can be found, forming part of the landscape of this region and serving as a vivid reminder of times past. These monuments are usually located on the outskirts of small modern towns. Most are built atop gentle hills that overlook the vast plateau of the Meseta. Architecturally, these castles often have a simple square layout, defended by strong prisms and cylinders of considerable height. Entrances and openings are disproportionately small. All architectural elements serve military defensive purposes: towers, keeps, walls, battlements, moats...

Many of these structures date back to the time of the Reconquista, when the peninsula was under Islamic rule, while the architectural and artistic consolidation of these castles mainly took place during the 14th and 15th centuries. Later, many parts of the complexes were added or modified to meet new needs. Today, a large number of these castles lie in ruins, despite the proud appearance of many and subsequent restoration efforts.

The model 40901 CASTELLUM 1 reproduces a type of construction similar to that of the Castle of Mombeltrán (Ávila) from the 15th century, at a scale of 1:145.

These monuments are usually located on the outskirts of small modern towns. Most of them are located on gentle hilltops which overlook the vast plain of the plateau. Architecturally these castles have a simple quadrangular ground plan, defended by powerful viewpoints and cylindrical structures of considerable height. The accesses and openings are relatively limited. All of the elements used in the building are meant for military defence or for war: towers, turrets, ramparts, battlements, moats, etc. The origin of many of these constructions can be found in the era of the Reconquista of the peninsula from Muslim domination, whereas the full consolidation of these castles, architecturally and artistically, took place during the 14^th and the 15^th centuries. Later, many of the structures were reformed and expanded in response to new needs. At present, in spite of the arrogant appearance of several of these, as well as the successive restorations, many castles are in ruins. The model 40902 CASTELLUM 2 reproduces the type of construction which is similar to the 15^th century castle of Villalonso (Valladolid) in 1:100 scale.

Castellum 4 Vallparadís 56,52 €

The model 40904 CASTELLUM 4 reproduces C. XII Vallparadís castle, in Terrassa (Barcelona) in 1:125 scale. The Castle of Vallparadís is presently located inside the city centre of Terrassa. Therefore, one can hardly imagine the original surroundings and topography. Nevertheless, the prevailing torrent indicates that there were orchards and water mills. The earliest documents, from the 11thcentury, refer to a purchase-sale agreement which implied the construction of a fortification. Later, the castle was linked to the lineage of the Terrassa family. It overlooked several different farms in the area, some of which have served as the origin for the names of the present neighbourhoods in the city. Following the purchase by the monks of the Carthusian order, important reform work was performed. It was later passed on to the Carmelite order of Barcelona, and in the 15^th century it was purchased by the Sentmenat family, which owned the castle up until the 19^th century. The Mauris owned the castle up until 1947, when it was taken over by the Terrassa Town Council. At present it is the site of a municipal museum. The building underwent different changes, the most noteworthy of which were performed in the 14^th century (foundation of the Carthusian monastery) and the controversial restoration of the face of the walls and the roofs which took place in the fifties. Recently, archaeological excavations have been performed in the northern moat to attempt to determine the original structure of the building. It seems to have been a simple square ground plan which included clearly defensive elements, with towers attached and a well designed moat, except for the natural slope of the torrent. Inside the structure, there are two floors. On the first floor, the most noteworthy areas are the large hall (Sala de Tinellet) with pointed arches, which housed the Carthusian church the charterhouse and several other rooms which have been meticulously restored and were used for purposes which have not been determined. Therefore, it is doubtful whether the perimeter of the present foundations are the same as the original foundations in the 12^th century. Romanesque Catalonia.
