In 1709, Brother Antonio de Olivares and Brother Isidro de Espinosa, having explored the area around what is now San Antonio (Texas), travelled to Spain to try to persuade people about the importance of establishing new missions in that area. Permission to do so was given by the Viceroy of New Spain, the Marquis of Valero. On 1 May 1718 the mission of San Antonio de Valero was founded, with the establishment four days later of the courthouse and a town of 400 people. The Jeremes Indians helped to build the mission, the bridge between San Antonio de Valero and the mission of San Antonio de Béjar, and a six-mile irrigation system for irrigating El Alamo.
The Battle of the Alamo relates the 12-day siege of Mexican troops against a secessionist militia of Texans (mainly American colonists) from February to March 1836. After a year of disputes, the Mexican army, with 6,500 men, set out to quell the uprisings in the area. Some 4,000 men reached the Alamo, against 187 (possibly 257) Texans. The Mission had been fortified, though it wasn’t equipped to withstand the artillery of that period. The Texans, entrenched, rejected the proposal to surrender. The fighting progressively tightened the noose around the Mission until finally it was attacked in the early hours of the morning on all four sides. All the rebels were annihilated in the attack or shot later on, except for a few surviving civilians, who were freed. Subsequently the Mexican troops split up and continued advancing until they were finally defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto, which led to their definitive retreat and the independence of the State of Texas.
Reference 40550 of the Spanish Mission of San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) is a scale reproduction of 1:100 of the church with the 1885 roof of that settlement.
