The Cutty Sark is one of the most famous clippers in maritime history and is considered a symbol of the golden age of fast merchant sailing ships. The wooden model kit from Artesanía Latina recreates this legendary vessel in the Refreshed Version at a scale of 1:84.

History of the Original

The Cutty Sark was built in 1869 in Dumbarton, Scotland, and was designed as a fast clipper for long-distance trade. Initially, she sailed in the tea trade between China and London, where speed and reliability determined economic success. One particularly famous episode is the Tea Race of 1872, in which the Cutty Sark lost her rudder in heavy weather and therefore fell decisively behind.

When the tea trade for sailing ships became increasingly unprofitable due to competition from steamships, the Cutty Sark switched to the Australian wool trade, where she experienced her most successful period. Later the ship was sold to Portuguese owners and continued operating as a cargo vessel before eventually returning to England and serving for a time as a training ship. Since 1954, the Cutty Sark has been preserved as a museum ship in Greenwich. After a fire in 2007, she was restored and remains preserved today as an important historic vessel.

Construction and Design
The Refreshed Version is designed as a classic plank-on-frame wooden model kit, suitable for a high-quality finish. The kit follows a structured construction approach with clearly organized parts and combines modern manufacturing of wooden components with numerous metal and detail parts.

This model provides an excellent basis for an ambitious but well-planned long-term project. Besides the hull and deck construction, the masts, standing and running rigging, and the complete sail plan play a major role in defining the character of the finished model.

Materials, Components and Sails

The Refreshed Version of the Cutty Sark is designed as a high-quality wooden kit with clearly separated materials. Structural and visible parts are made from laser-cut components of American walnut, American cherry, and limewood, as well as limewood plywood.

For planking, strips and round stock, the kit additionally includes birch strips, walnut strips, walnut dowels, as well as sapeli strips and sapeli veneer, allowing the hull, decks and details to be finished cleanly and with visually differentiated wood tones.

For finer equipment and detailing, the kit includes a brass photo-etched sheet (200 × 130 mm). Numerous small parts are sorted into four transparent boxes and consist of wooden, brass and die-cast components. In total, the kit contains more than 3,000 individual parts.

For the final appearance, 26 pre-sewn sails are included, allowing the complete sail set to be installed without additional sewing work. Fabric-style flags are also included. The building documentation consists of a 100-page full-color instruction manual and five large plan sheets. Plans are also available digitally as PDFs and are complemented by numbered photographs and a photographic parts overview, making it easier to identify the many individual components.

Scope of Delivery and Presentation
A wooden display stand is included for presentation, complemented by a brass nameplate. This allows the finished model to be displayed immediately as a showcase piece – ideal for a display cabinet, shelf or model-building workshop.
